Urban Farming Projects

Flyover Farm

The Flyover Farm is our biggest challenge to date! We are working to build a demonstration, research and community urban farm in the heart of Mumbai. The Farm is located on the roof of a low income, mixed-use building on the busiest street in Mumbai.  There is no source for organic produce or any green, open space in walking distance from the building.

The Flyover Farm will:

  • grow organic fruits, herbs and vegetables
  • compost kitchen waste from the building
  • distribute produce through the rooftop grocery
  • host workshops to educate and expose city dwellers to the possibilities of urban farming and train urban farmers
  • research, design and develop best practices for rooftop urban farming serve as an outdoor community and activity space for building residents

The SNEHA Udyaan

SNEHA, The Society for Nutrition, Education and Heath Action, is an NGO in Mumbai providing health services and education to women and children in Mumbai’s slums. The goal of the SNEHA UDHYAAN is to create a food garden to be used for demonstrations and workshops, teaching women how to grow their own food in small urban spaces. Workshops will be held on using recycled materials for food and plant growing, composting, and other methods to promote health, nutrition and sustainability. The garden features a shaded growing and demonstration space built from bamboo and recycled sari-cloth, as well as a seed-nursery. SNEHA is currently growing their own spinach, beetroot, tomatoes, green chili, and much more! The garden also acts as an employment opportunity for women from the slums. The garden will eventually have a site for composting as well as an amrut-mitthi station.

SPROUTS Demo Garden

SPROUTS is a environmental trust working to generate public ownership of the environment and its resources' among members of society.  This garden is right next to the Malad train station footpath, making it an incredibly visible example of urban farming.  We worked with SPROUTS to train their interns and staff in the basics of urban farming and now they have started to teach others how to grow their own food.

Bombay HUB

The Bombay Hub is a shared office space for social entrepreneurs.  F & L's garden served as a beautiful, outdoor space for Hub members to enjoy and experience the taste of organic, incredibly fresh produce.  We converted the unused terrace into a very densely packed herb and vegetable garden with a few fruit trees.  This garden served as our main demonstration and workshop site from May 2010 to March 2012.

Home Kitchen Gardens

Fresh & Local designs individually tailored kitchen gardens for a variety of clients and uses. Kitchen gardens can range from small, grill-window herb gardens to larger balcony and terrace food gardens, allowing clients to grow a variety of different herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Fresh & Local staff will also teach clients on growing methods, as well as perform follow-up visits to check on the health of the garden.
